Ellen Archer is the President of HMH Trade Publishing where she is responsible for driving strategic growth and expanding the company’s consumer publishing business. Ms. Archer is a media executive and business leader who during her career has demonstrated success growing and transforming content businesses in the technology-driven media world. She has led businesses as well as held executive publishing leadership roles at The Walt Disney Company, Random House, and Simon & Schuster. Her work has included transforming companies from print to digital-dominant plays; new digital first content creation; revenue and margin growth; and multi-platform content and talent development.

She is known as a high-energy, visionary, and creative leader who delivers results and motivates teams. 

Ms. Archer has previously worked at The Walt Disney Company, where she was president and publisher of Hyperion Books, responsible for the direction, management, and performance of the adult trade publishing division. Hyperion published more than 2,000 books since its inception, over 100 of which became national bestsellers under her leadership. After the sale of Hyperion’s business to Hachette in June 2013, Archer transitioned into a role as head of East Coast development for the ABC television network, identifying stories, books, and talent to fuel programming.

During her years in publishing, Archer directed a wide variety of multi-million copy and #1 New York Times bestselling campaigns including: John Grisham’s THE FIRM, THE PELICAN BRIEF, and THE RUNAWAY JURY; Mitch Albom’s THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN, FOR ONE MORE DAY, and THE TIME KEEPER; THE LAST LECTURE by Randy Pausch, THE VIRTUES OF AGING by President Jimmy Carter; Candace Bushnell’s LIPSTICK JUNGLE and ONE FIFTH AVENUE; and Jacqueline Kennedy: HISTORIC CONVERSATIONS ON LIFE WITH JOHN F.KENNEDY, which was named #1 Enhanced eBook by Apple in 2012.

Ms. Archer has served on the Boards of A&E, Poets & Writers, and NYU’s Masters in Publishing Program. Currently, Archer serves on The New York Women in Communications Foundation Board as co-Vice President of Development. Ms. Archer is a Managing Director of Golden Seeds and is a member of Springboard Enterprise’s Media and Technology Council. She is a member of The Women’s Forum of New York. For over a decade, Ms. Archer participated annually in ABC Media Network’s Mentoring Program, selected to work with junior staff on career development. She is an iMentor to New York City Public School high school student.

Archer received a B.A. from Hamilton College. She lives in New York City.
